{"id":35,"date":"2013-01-13T00:32:33","date_gmt":"2013-01-13T00:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thewebtrain.co.uk\/blog\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2015-10-25T23:41:57","modified_gmt":"2015-10-25T23:41:57","slug":"hs2-railway-news","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.thewebtrain.co.uk\/blog\/hs2-railway-news\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 Railway News"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>HS2 Railway Updates<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopetition.com\/petition\/39524.html\">Say &#8220;Yes&#8221; to HS2, People in favour of the proposed UK high speed rail link \u00bb GoPetition<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-42\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thewebtrain.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/UK_high_speed_rail_map.png?resize=345%2C603&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"UK high speed rail map\" width=\"345\" height=\"603\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Initial proposal for HS2 and link to European network<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">28 January 2013<\/span><\/strong>: the\u00a0Government has now confirmed the outline details of\u00a0Phase 2 of the HS2 railway and the locations of\u00a0the\u00a0stations to serve\u00a0northern conurbations\u00a0in England &#8211; as shown below.\u00a0 The HS2 cost is estimated at <a title=\"link to Financial Times article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/500919aa-697c-11e2-9246-00144feab49a.html\">\u00a334.5bn<\/a> &#8211; up from \u00a332bn, with the increased costs resulting from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the addition of a station at Manchester airport;<\/li>\n<li>a project alignment change &#8211; to access Crewe from the line;<\/li>\n<li>increased costs to lessen impact on communities\/environment;<\/li>\n<li>the proposed \u00a31.4bn spur to Heathrow (on hold pending review).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Phase I of HS2 (London to Birmingham) is estimated at \u00a316.3bn, with phase II (Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds) at \u00a318.2bn &#8211; bringing the total cost to \u00a334.5bn. Capital and operating costs (\u00a359bn over a 67-year lifecycle) less revenue stream (\u00a333bn), could mean an eventual \u00a326bn cost to the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>The path for the Y-shaped northern phase, from\u00a0Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds, has been defined in <a title=\"link to DfT's detailed information about HS2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/hs2-phase-two-initial-preferred-route-plan-and-profile-maps\" target=\"_blank\">outline<\/a> and can be extensively examined.\u00a0 The overall route is shown\u00a0on\u00a0two route maps: \u2018<a title=\"13.6 MB PDF file for West Midlands to Leeds HS2 route\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/68988\/hs2-arp-000-dr-rt-55001_3-0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">West Midlands to Leeds<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a title=\"8.5 MB PDF file for West Midlands to Manchester HS2 route\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/69037\/hs2-msg-wm0-zz-dr-rt-40014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">West Midlands to Manchester<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0 In addition, each\u00a0map shows\u00a0how the route has been split into route sections,\u00a0giving the\u00a0reference number for each section.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0decision, on extending the\u00a0high-speed link to Heathrow,\u00a0has been deferred until 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">27 January 2013<\/span><\/strong>: the anticipated statement from Govt. regarding stage 2 of HS2 is expected tomorrow.\u00a0 A key focus will be by those Northern cities awaiting the announcement on the high-speed rail route and stations,\u00a0as the Transport Secretary is to outline a proposed path for the Y-shaped phase beyond Birmingham &#8211; to Manchester and Leeds.\u00a0 This will result in a \u00a333bn investement for the\u00a0HS2 project, as a whole.\u00a0 A fiercely contested decision, about\u00a0building a high-speed link to Heathrow and\u00a0originally destined to be part of the phase two announcement, could be deferred.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">10 January 2013<\/span><\/strong>: The High Speed 2 (<a title=\"link to HS2 homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">HS2<\/a>) railway project remains a firm commitment\u00a0and is progressing\u00a0&#8211; 12 months on from the government&#8217;s decision to proceed with the next phase of high-speed rail travel in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"By Cnbrb (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0) or GFDL (http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/copyleft\/fdl.html)], via Wikimedia Commons.
